Chapter Thirteen

Phren doesn’t speak as he takes me to my family. I don’t ask any questions, but I can see the many thoughts floating over his face. I want to tell myself it’s just the weight of the sword wearing me down, or maybe it’s the fact I haven’t been in this form for this long for so long. I want to tell myself many things, and the things to avoid the truth. I’m heavy with what I have put into action and I’m sinking in the doubts the weight is causing for me.

I remember the little grotto to which he takes me. I remember coming here long ago with my mother. She would have me wait outside, playing in the little patches of sea grass until she returned. I was never allowed inside. I had asked my aunt once what was inside the thick rock walls, and she had told me ‘the dawning’ with a smile. I didn’t understand then. I do now. This is the cave of the sea witches – our beginning.

Just as our castle was wrapped in the magical bubble, so is the entrance to the cave. My curiosity overrides the discomfort of the change, as if my legs are eager to roam these secret caverns.

The sounds crash into me with the force of a wave. Everywhere is once proud Noble families with haunted eyes and gaunt faces. Their finery hangs on once-healthy frames, sunken with the war and the aftermath such things cause for people.

“Don’t say a thing,” Phren whispers his warning as the many sets of eyes turn our way. “Some here blame you too.”

My tongue wants to form the many words, but my mind has the strength to stop. I stare as each family, huddled with their house, begin to gasp or murmur. Some even stand, blocking my path, as if I am a threat to their little corner of this cave. All except for one family and I would recognize that shade of green anywhere.

They are kneeling, heads bowed amid so many hushed voices filling the dank air around us. My heart feels as if it’s slowing, stopping with the surge of the many nameless emotions beating in its place in my chest. A family which once smirked at my stumbles is now kneeling for my presence.

“Rona?” her voice calls, and my feet are moving even as my heart is stopping.

This is impossible, my mind is telling me. Even as I stare at her, unsure of what to do, it fights with what I am seeing. Rossi, in her full, laced glory, is standing only a hand’s space away. She too is frozen, weeping as I am to be seeing something neither of us ever expected to happen.

“How?” My voice finds the strength to ask, too afraid of what her answer might be.

“Turns out their siren part is stronger than anyone knew. Isn’t that right, Rendah?” My aunt is doing her normal purring of a cloaked insult. Her eyes, though, don’t match the angst.
